is your love selfish or selfless

This thought is still being formed but I wanted to get it down while I was thinking about it.  As a diabetic, what I should eat and drink and what I want to eat and drink often do not align.  My mother in law was asking me what I wanted to have on hand to drink on a trip we are taking.  After thinking about it for a second I asked, do you love me enough to get me what will make me happy or do you love me enough to protect me from the things I want.
This concept of  of do you do things to keep people happy or do you do things in order to do what is best for others basically falls down to selfishness.  Will the outcome of my actions prove to make this person happy and like me more, or will they potentially make this person upset and like me less even though it will be for their benefit.
It makes me think of the prophets of old.  I don't question if they heard God or not, but we see often times in the bible where prophets would tell the leaders what they wanted to hear rather than what God was saying because if they told them something that made the rulers angry often they would be killed.
