The Physics of a Word: The Universe as Divine Infrastructure
Most people view Creation as a "one-and-done" event—God spoke, the universe popped into existence, and now it runs on its own like a self-winding clock. But the Bible suggests something much more active. The universe doesn't just exist; it is being held.
As a Geographer and someone with an engineering background, I look at the laws of physics as a set of operating instructions. But those instructions require a Processor to run them. Scripture tells us exactly who that is:
"He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." — Colossians 1:17 (NASB)
The Greek word for "hold together" (synistēmi) implies a continuous, bonding force. If God stopped "holding," the universe wouldn't just get messy; it would cease to be. He is the fundamental force that keeps atoms from flying apart and planets in their orbits. If the laws of physics exist because God "spoke" them, then He is not subject to them—they are subject to Him.
We see the "General of the Universe" exercise this authority throughout history. When Joshua needed more time, the sun and moon stood still. When Israel needed a path, the Red Sea stood like a wall. These aren't "glitches" or "magic"; they are moments where the Legislator exercised His right to pause the secondary laws of nature to fulfill a primary promise. The physical world is subordinate to the Spoken Word.
The Definition of the Void
This brings us to the "brain-breaking" part of the story. To understand what happened at the Cross, we have to define our terms beyond Sunday School imagery.
Heaven is life in the unfiltered, absolute presence of God.
Hell is the complete and total absence of the presence of God.
There is a common, dangerous misconception that "Hell won't be that bad." This misses two fundamental truths: eternity is forever, and God’s presence—even filtered through what we call "reality"—is the only thing that makes existence tolerable.
Right now, every human being exists in a "filtered" reality. Even the most staunch atheist breathes God's air, sees by His light, and is kept physically intact by His laws. "Every good thing" is a byproduct of His proximity. Hell is the removal of that filter. It is a terrifying, absolute vacuum where the Source of all light, heat, and cohesion is gone.
The Emulsifier Trap
Our simple minds often try to justify our faith and our sin simultaneously. We try to act as the "emulsifiers" of our own lives—trying to find a way to mix the oil of our sin with the water of God’s holiness. But in doing so, we reduce the Creator of the universe to an actor in a script of our own writing.
We forget that Holiness, by definition, is "separate." You cannot "dilute" God's purity to make it compatible with wickedness. Habakkuk 1:13 tells us His eyes are too pure to approve evil. There is no middle ground. When the two meet, they don't mix; they collide. On the Cross, we see the result of that collision.
The Great Disconnect: A Systemic "Redline" Event
When Jesus took on our sin, He did the impossible: He stepped out of the "filter" and into the Void. Because God is Holy, a separation occurred that our brains cannot fully grasp. When the Son became sin for us, He experienced the literal Hell of total separation from the Father.
For three hours, the "Current" was interrupted. If we had modern technology at the foot of the Cross, I believe our sensors would have recorded an astrophysical anomaly that defies standard explanation:
The Spectrometers (Photonic Failure): During those three hours of darkness, a spectrometer might not have just shown "clouds," but a complete cessation of photon emission. If the "Light of the World" is in the Void, the sun loses its fundamental permission to shine. It was a physical manifestation of a spiritual vacuum.
The Seismometers (Structural Failure): The earthquake and the splitting rocks were the physical "stress fractures" of a creation that was never meant to exist apart from its Creator. A seismometer might have recorded a frequency that didn't originate from a fault line, but from the very fabric of matter vibrating apart as the "Glue" of the universe was strained.
The Atomic Clocks (Temporal Distortion): If the Creator of Time is entering the Void, time itself may have warped. Three hours for the observers may have been an eternity of "Hell" for the Son—a localized dilation where time stretched under the immense gravity of the world's sin.
The Ultimate Risk and the Cosmic Reset
God didn't lose control. He is omniscient; He knew the outcome and He wrote the script. But we must not mistake His sovereignty for a lack of cost. He didn't just risk a human life; He permitted the "Hell" of separation to touch the heart of the Trinity. He allowed the universe to begin to "un-create" itself just so He could reach across that chasm to get to us.
When Jesus cried out, "It is finished," it was the ultimate System Reset. The debt was paid, the separation was bridged, and the laws of physics snapped back into place—now permanently anchored by the blood of the Sustainer. God doesn't need us, but this cosmic stress test proves how much He wants us. He was willing to let the sun go dark and the earth break to ensure that we never have to face that absolute Void alone.
